  Portable Appliance Testing
All Businesses, including employers, self employed and landlords have a legal duty to ensure that their electrical equipment is safe. This includes the fixed installation (distribution board, wiring and power and lighting connectors) and any electrical equipment connected to the fixed installation.
Portable Appliance Testing applies to all items connected the fixed installation either by means of a plug and socket or wired into a switched, fused outlet.
Examples of portable appliance include: kitchen appliances, hand held appliances, portable electric fires, IT and music equipment.
The fixed Electrical installation must be inspected and tested on a periodic basis to meet the requirements of BS 7671 (known ans the wiring regulations) and IEE guidance Note 3. This should be done by a suitably qualified electrician.
Portable appliances should also be inspected and tested on a regular basis by a competent person. The scope and frequency of testing depends on the type of equipment, the environment in which it is used and who is using it.
Hurst Batch Services offers advice on the appropriate scope and frequency of tests required to meet the legal requirement as well as conducting the required inspection and testing and issuing the required documentation and labelling.
